Harwell replaces their IBM 370/165 with an IBM 370/168.
Atlas Laboratory Closes
In May 1975, the Chairman of SRC made the decision to close the Atlas Computer Laboratory.
The arguments were approximately:
SRC is short of money
Money can be saved by moving all Particle Physics research to the Rutherford Laboratory
and closing the particle physics facility at Daresbury
That leaves Daresbury short of a role so the science-related activities of the
Atlas Computer Laboratory would move to Daresbury
The 1906A computer together with the share of the 360/195 used by the Atlas
Computer Laboratory would be
taken over by the Rutherford Laboratory
and the Atlas service run as part of the Rutherford service.
The Engineering Board of SRC wants to start a new initiative
with regard to interactive facilities for engineers and this should be
put in place by the systems staff of the Atlas Computer Laboratory
as part of a new National Computer Centre to be established at Chilton together with
some engineering-related facilities of the Department of Trade and Industry.
Chilton would become a federal site with a Site Director and the Interactive Facility
having a Director that reported to the Site Director.
This new arrangement meant that discussion of a new computer at the Atlas Computer Laboratory became moot as it no longer existed.
