W3C Approves Patent Policy

21 May 2003: W3C approved the W3C Patent Policy based on review by the W3C Advisory Committee and the public. Written by the Patent Policy Working Group, the policy received more support from the Membership than any Recommendation in recent history. The policy encourages royalty-free Web standards. It governs the handling of patents in the process of producing and implementing W3C Recommendations. Read the public Director's decision and the press release and visit the patent policy home page.

First Latin American web congress, Santiago 2003 (call for papers)

The First Latin American web congress will be held in Santiago on November 10-12 2003.

International researchers, technologists, and leaders from academia, industry, and government will gather at LA-WEB to present, demonstrate, and discuss the latest developments of the Web and how they can be used to empower the Latin American Web.

The technical programme will include refereed paper presentations, alternate track presentations (see below), plenary sessions, panels, and poster sessions. Tutorials will precede the main program.

During the past years, Chile has been the most stable growing economy in the region, and is one of the regional leaders in information technology and telecommunications. Santiago, with more than 5 million inhabitants, is not only the capital of Chile, but also its financial and administrative heart. The city was founded in 1541 and is located at the foot of the Andes Mountains and only one hour away from the Pacific Ocean, thus being the ideal point to start tours to the north (desert), south (lakes and glaciers) or west (Easter island).

W3C Semantic Tour, Europe 10-24 June

2 April 2003: W3C holds a series of one day events in Rome, London, Munich, Athens and Brussels from 10-24 June. The W3C Semantic Tour promotes W3C technologies that bring to the Web more effective discovery, automation, integration, and reuse of data. Organizers come from the W3C Italy, UK and Ireland, Germany, Greece and Benelux Offices. All events are open to the public and free of charge.

Web Standards Switch, Log Validator Help to Improve Web Sites

26 May 2003: The W3C QA Activity is pleased to announce Web Standards Switch: or how to improve your Web site easily, an article written for the corporate environment, and a new release of the Log Validator. Both resources can help improve the quality of Web sites, regardless of their size. Read about the W3C Quality Assurance (QA) Activity.

PNG Second Edition Is a W3C Proposed Recommendation

27 May 2003: W3C is pleased to announce the publication of the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) Specification (Second Edition) as a Proposed Recommendation. Comments are invited through 23 June. PNG is a graphics file format for raster images. Indexed-color, grayscale, and truecolor images are supported, plus an optional alpha channel. The document is in the final stages of standardization at ISO as an International Standard, ISO/IEC 15948. Read about the Graphics Activity.

26 May 2003: W3C is pleased to announce the renewal of the Privacy Activity through June 2004 as a result of Member response to the Call for Review of the Privacy Activity proposal. It is possible to join a Working Group at any time. AC Representatives should please send a note to the group Chair:
