Since the second disk surface is about to be attached to the PDP15, it is time to specify the use of DOS.
Section 1 is the number of blocks of the disk users should keep to.
Section 2 is the backup that shall be provided to the filestore.
Section 3 is the password system.
Section 4 is how to share files.
Section 5 is what to do with troubles.
Now that there are about 30008 (153610) blocks available on the disk, it is possible to leave files there, instead of transferring backwards and forwards between DEC tape and disk.
It would be unfair for any user to take up more than ¼ of the available space, and I shall police this. Any user who I find taking up more than 6008 blocks shall have all his binary files deleted. If that is not enough, the largest of his files shall be dumped onto any of his DEC tapes which are available and a note of this written on the whiteboard.
Since the disk only shows errors once a quarter, I shall dump the disk once a week, on Friday at 15.30, and deputise JRG to do it for me, when I am not present.
There shall be 4 of these dump tapes so nothing will be saved for more than 4 weeks, unless the user saves the file himself.
Anyone who wants to use KVT, must dump the disk onto a special magnetic tape, and restore it afterwards. Instructions for the use of DOSSAV are pinned to the notice board.
So that I can recognise users, please will they use the following passwords when logging in:
SYS - Graham England AHF - Alan Francis JRG - Julian Gallop FRA - Bob Hopgood PMN - Paul Nelson WDS - Wade Shaw RET - Eric Thomas DCT - Dave Toll
Everyone else should use user SCR.
Anyone objecting to this, please come and see me.
It is possible to give everyone else read access to one of your files, by the PIP command:
R DK NFLNM EXT * DK OFLNM EXT(1)
This also changes the file name from OFLNM to NFLNM. If you do not do this, the file is protected against all users except SYS.
If there are any troubles with the system, please bring a listing and tell me. I will try to help. There are known to be many bugs still in the DOS Fortran compiler, and Sprogs Paper no 3 is now largely out-of-date.
