The theme for the Rio Conference was using the web everywhere: Catch the next wave of the Web. The conference took place at the Windsor Barra Hotel on Barra da Tijuca beach. The logo is of the Sugar Loaf and Urca mountains looking towards them from the inland side with Copacabana Beach to the right.
We decided that the main parts of the animation should include:
- Copacabana Beach
- Use of the Web in an unlikely situation
- Views of Sugar Loaf and Urca from the beach side
- Some mechanism to move the view through 180 degrees and then move in to the logo view of the scene
There were several abortive attempts at defining real 3D mountains in SVG that were unconvincing. We tried a long zoom in from the Windsor Barra Hotel but that need a really large amount of sea front to be built. We eventually settled on a storyboard as follows:
- Zoom in to Copacabana Beach
- Focus on the sister hotel, the Windsor Atlantic
- Use beach volley ball as the focus
- Use stylised Ws as the players
- The unlikely situation for using the web to be the umpire having two iPads to put up the score and players using iPads to give the signals to the servers as they didn't have fingers ;-)
- Play at least one volley ball point
- Zoom in on the cable car to make the rotation through 180 degrees easier and finally morph the view into the logo itself
One advantage of the approach was that the 2016 Olympics were planning to have the volleyball stadium right in front of the Windsor Atlantic Hotel.
The whole animation was defined as a set of 3D scenes using Path_ology's scene definitions. The following pages give some detail of the 16 separate scenes that made up the animation.
